Living in Boca Grande
From the moment one crosses over the Gasparilla Island bridge on Florida’s Southwest Coast to Boca Grande, one begins to appreciate the serene beauty that has attracted presidents, dignitaries and celebrities through the years, including the George H.W. Bush family, the Rockefellers, the Astors, the du Ponts, Audrey Hepburn and Harrison Ford.
Located 15 miles from Englewood and 50 miles south of Sarasota, the island was named after an infamous pirate, Jose Gaspar, who is said to have stored his plundered loot in the area.
Boca Grande is the main attraction on Gasparilla Island. Its name (Spanish for “Big Mouth”) comes from the mouth of the waterway, called Boca Grande Pass, at the southern tip of the island, which is over a mile wide and up to 86 feet deep.
Boca Grande is protected by Florida state legislation designed to preserve the pristine coastal ecosystems on Florida’s barrier islands called the Gasparilla Island Conservation District Act of 1980. It ensures that no more than five dwelling units can be built on an acre and limits the heights of structures to 38 feet. Golf carts and bicycles are the preferred methods of getting around town, and boating is a way of life.
In addition to residents who enjoy the azure waters and seven miles of powdery white beaches, recreational fishermen from around the world are attracted to the area for the thousands of tarpon that converge in Boca Grande Pass, the deepest natural inlet on the Gulf of Mexico, from April through August.
The homes in Boca Grande are elegant and unique. Contemporary tropical architecture mixes with Mediterranean, coastal chic and old-Florida style homes. BCB Homes will go the extra mile to build the home you have envisioned on Gasparilla Island.
