About Sanibel Island
The barrier islands of Sanibel and Captiva connect to the mainland and the city of Fort Myers by a three-mile causeway. The world-renowned islands stretch for a total of 20 miles along the beautiful turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Sanibel Island is about 15 miles long and three miles deep at its widest point, totaling 17.5 square miles in size. First inhabited by the Calusa Indians, it was claimed by the Spanish in the mid-16th century, who kept it until 1763 and then traded it to Britain for Cuba. By the 1930s, Sanibel had become a popular tarpon fishing destination for the likes of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.
Today, there are approximately 6,500 permanent residents and 18,000 seasonal residents who vacation here every year. Sanibel has no traffic lights, 27 miles of protected bike paths, and no building here is higher than three stories.
There is something for everyone on Sanibel, including exquisite homes and condos along the Gulf, the Bay, on canals that lead to the Bay, in golf communities, and inland. At least 60% of Sanibel will never be developed, however, because the acreage has been permanently reserved for nature and wildlife sanctuaries.
