About Old Naples
You will find Old Naples between 7th Avenue North and 13th Avenue South, West of US-41 on the Gulf of Mexico. It encompasses the downtown area of Naples that extends southward from South Golf Drive to Aqualane Shores and Port Royal and includes 5th Avenue, Third Street South, and the Broad Avenue Galleries.
Although it can be spelled “Old” or “Olde,” the true “Olde Naples, Florida” typically refers to the area around the historic Naples Pier. The name is a tribute to the original beachfront homes of the first Millionaire’s Row built at the turn of the 20th century.
The history of Old Naples dates back to the late 1800’s when General John S. Williams and his partner, Louisiana businessman Mr. Walter N. Halderman, founded Naples and named it after Italy’s famous Bay of Naples.
Their development group laid out a town along the gorgeous beach, started to sell lots, and built a pier and a 16-room hotel. The Naples Hotel’s first guest was President Grover Cleveland’s sister, Rose, who was among the first to build a beach home on “Millionaire’s Row.”
