About Boca Grande
From the moment you cross over the Gasparilla Island bridge, you begin to appreciate the alluring charm and privacy of Boca Grande.
The name of the community (Spanish for “Big Mouth”) comes from the mouth of the waterway, called Boca Grande Pass, at the southern tip of the island, which is over a mile wide and up to 86 feet deep. The island was named for Jose Gaspar, an infamous pirate who is said to have stored his plundered loot in the area.
Residents of Boca Grande enjoy a historic downtown area, azure waters, and seven miles of sugar sand beaches. Recreational fishermen from around the world are attracted to the area for the thousands of tarpon that converge in Boca Grande Pass, the deepest natural inlet on the Gulf of Mexico, between April and August.
The island’s first small hotel, the Hotel Boca Grande, opened in 1911. Sunday trains brought visitors for a day at the beach, and some of them purchased property on the island and built homes.
The hotel was enlarged in 1913 and transformed into an elegant world-class resort. Renamed the Gasparilla Inn, it doubled in size again a few years later, when the island became a major vacation destination for wealthy northerners. Today, the Gasparilla Inn & Club is one of the largest surviving resort hotels in Florida and a member of Historic Hotels of America.
